Michael D. "Mike" Whitney, age 59, of Toledo, went home to be with his Lord and Saviour on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, where he was joyfully reunited with his grandson Brady. He was born on August 30, 1953 to Edward and Betty J. (Vleugal) Whitney in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Mike served his country with pride in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Conflict. He retired from GM Powertrain after 30 years of service and after his retirement he enjoyed working at Wildwood Metro Park. On August 14, 2004 he married the love of his life, Peggy Whitney in Toledo. Most precious to Mike was his three daughters and son. Mike was a member of Hope Baptist Church where he served as a Chaplain of the Wood County Jail Ministry; bringing the message of salvation and hope.
Mike was a true outdoorsman, enjoying God's creation. He loved to share his love of the outdoors with his wonderful and beautiful grandchildren; they will cherish these memories forever. His family will greatly miss him and look forward to the day when they will be reunited with Mike in Heaven.
The family will receive guests on Friday, May 17, 2013 from 6-9:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will begin Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Hope Baptist Church, 6250 South Ave., Toledo, OH 43615; with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place on a separate day at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI.
