Michael J. Boyer

October 14, 1943 — July 21, 2023

Michael J. "Mike" Boyer passed away peacefully at Ebeid Hospice Center on Friday July 21st surrounded by his family. He was born October 14, 1943 to Mary C. (Nunnold) and Paul J. Boyer. Throughout his 79 years, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.

Mike grew up in the old South End and as a boy attended Immaculate Conception (Darby) church and school, until his parents moved to West Toledo where he attended St. Agnes parish and school. In his youth he was a baseball player (being a southpaw means he played first base), and even went out for football in the fifth grade. Despite his athletic zeal, his football career ended abruptly when he broke his leg.

Following his graduation from St. Agnes, he went to St. Francis DeSales High School with a scholarship and graduated in 1961. He became a lifetime supporter of St. Francis, never forgetting his connection. He went to John Carroll University on a scholarship, graduating with honors and obtaining a degree in accounting. While at John Carroll he was in ROTC, and completed his military commitment in the Army for two years after his graduation.

He went to work for Arthur Young & Company in their Toledo office after his military service and worked there for 10 years. He left Arthur Young to join Acme Specialty Manufacturing, one of his clients at AY, as a Vice President and CFO. He worked there until his retirement, and was greatly admired by those working for him for his tireless efforts at improving operations and its financial health.

Mike was always a hard worker, but he also liked his leisure time, especially in retirement. He enjoyed golf and cards with his friends, and didn't mind a friendly wager now and then. He also loved to go to the casinos and flew out to Las Vegas on frequent trips. He was a devoted Detroit Tigers and, and a frustrated Lions fan. He was also a big Notre Dame football fan, and according to his daughter Rachael, "their game schedule dictated his availability on the weekends!" He was a Knight of Columbus, and a devoted Catholic, and was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church.

"He'd give you the shirt off his back," as the saying goes. He was genuine, humble and honorable, and his family and friends will attest to his easygoing manner and kind heart. He had a great sense of humor, and gave as good as he got.

Prior to his marriage to Cathy, Mike was married to Darlene (Olah) Boyer and they had a loving marriage for almost 40 years before she passed. Darlene was the mother of their three children.

He lived life to the fullest and will be sadly missed by his wife Cathy but especially by his daughter Rachael (Jeff) Hunyor and grandchildren Mallory, Michael, Nathan, Matt and Amanda (Michael) Kussin.

Also surviving are his sisters Sharon (Carl) Morton, Patricia (James) Strasser and Mary Therese, as well as younger brothers Larry (Anita), Christopher (Robin), Donald, Mark (Meg), Kevin and Martin (Emie) and countless nephews and nieces. Mike was preceded in death by his first wife Darlene and sons Brian and Jason.

Visitation will be Thursday July 27 from 10:00- 11:00 AM prior to the mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11:00 AM at Little Flower Catholic Church, to be followed by interment at Toledo Memorial Park in Sylvania. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution, please consider the Paul and Mary Boyer Scholarship Fund at St. Francis DeSales High School or Little Flower Catholic Parish.
