Merideth "Red" Freels, age 92, of Sylvania, OH passed away peacefully April 13, 2024 at home surrounded by his loving family.
Red was born in Springfield, TN on June 8, 1931 to Leslie and Sarah (Pryor) Freels. He married Joanne Jacobi in May 1952. Red was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and his family was everything to him.
Red served in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1952 and fought in the Korean War also receiving a Purple Heart.
He worked for the Lucas County Engineering Office and Lathrop before opening his own business; M. Freels Survey Co. in 1973 where he was a land surveyor for Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana. Red retired in 1993.
Red enjoyed traveling, spending time with family and loved playing Mexican train dominoes. He also loved tinkering with stuff in the garage. Red's favorite trips were to Alaska (twice) and going on the honor flight to Washington D.C.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Joanne; brothers, Larry, Robert and James Freels; sisters, Martha Murphy and Betty Curtis.
Left to cherish Red's memory are his loving children, Marcia Lewis, Susan Beaver and Jon (Dona) Freels; grandchildren, Amy, Corey, Kevin, Courtney, Katelyn, Adrienne; great-grandchildren, Madasyn, Jacob, Aiden, Austin, Ava, Steven, Jay, Ella, Tyson, KarMyn, Kamrin, Bentley, Luke, and Axl; siblings, Janice Wing and Leatha Muir; and companion, Karen Daniel.
The family will receive guests on Monday, April 22, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home – Northwest Chapel, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will begin Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
