Menno "Mel" "Gus" Gosses, age 88, died on Thursday, May 31, 2012. Born in Chicago, Illinois on May 9, 1924, he was the son of Cornelius August and Jikka (Dam) Gosses. When Menno was five years old, his family moved to the Netherlands, where he learned to speak fluent Dutch and Friese. Just prior to the invasion of Holland by Germany, the family returned to America.
During World War II, he served in the US Army as a military police officer and as a private first class surgical technician. He was in the Pacific Campaign on Tinian Island along with The Enola Gay which bombed Hiroshima.
He married Margaret Jean Crandall in 1945. After the war he worked at the Crandall Body Shop in Toledo. In 1954 he joined the Toledo Police Force, served for 24 years, and retired with the rank of Sergeant in the Dispatchers' Office. Menno was a member of The Retired Police Officers' Association. His Dutch first name was so unusual, that he would good-naturedly explain its pronunciation: "MENNO: Women, yes – Men, no." He loved hunting, fishing, hiking; and was an accomplished watercolorist. He relished time spent with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; sons: Ronald (Diana), Gordon (Betty), Martin (Jenifer); grandchildren: Christopher (Josh), Matthew (Amy), Justin, Anna Jo (Jeff) and Sara; great-grandchildren: Kara and Reagan Gosses. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Martin Gosses.
The family will receive guests Monday from 2-4:00 p.m. and 6-8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will begin in the funeral home Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Final Salute given by the Toledo Police Department. Interment will follow in Toledo Memorial Park.
Remembrances may be given to Heartland Hospice or an organization of the donor's choice.
