Melvin D. Scurlock

Melvin D. "Mel" Scurlock, age 89, of Toledo, passed away Friday, January 29, 2021 at home with loving wife by his side. He was born on June 27, 1931 to Carl David and Elizabeth (Hawkins) Scurlock in Athens, Ohio. Mel was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving his country proudly during the Korean War. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #99 also serving as the Past Commander. Mel also belonged to the 40 and 8. He was employed with the American Ship Builders for many years until closing. Mel then went on to work at Hans Hansen's for over 20 years until retiring. He enjoyed family get-togethers and spending time with his grandchildren. Mel's smile, spirit and caring nature will deeply be missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Alma Jean; daughter, Donna Crawford; 2 sisters; and 5 brothers. Mel is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Mary Scurlock; children, Kathy Jo Clark, Carl (Darlene) Scurlock, Melvin (Mary) Scurlock, David Scurlock, Debra (Ron) Sumner, Robert (Cookie) Crawford, and Richard (Janet) Crawford; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and one on the way; 1 great-great-grandson; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

The family will receive guests on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 from 4 – 7:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home – Northwest Chapel, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will begin Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
