Melvin (Duke) J. Norman
Melvin "Duke" Norman aka Melvin Nowacki age 97 passed away peacefully on August 6, 2021. He was born July 24, 1924 to Catherine and James Nowacki and a couple of months later Catherine died at the age of 21. Duke was raised by Anna and Peter Beczynski and their family for ten years and was in St. Anthony orphanage for almost four years. He graduated from Libbey High School in 1943. At the age of 19, he was drafted for WWII and during his physical it was discovered that he had the start of tuberculosis and was immediately admitted to William M. Roche hospital where he stayed six months. While in the hospital, he took a liking to a nursing training student. He did not make a good first impression, but he did not give up and five years later married Florence Margaret Perkins on June 24, 1949 in Angola, IN. They had two wonderful children, J. Ann and James. Margaret died February 15, 1996.
Duke was employed with Champion Spark Plug for 39 years retiring as a Specifications Writer in 1990. He organized Champion's softball team and the Guys and Dolls Sunday bowling league for many years. Softball became Duke's pride and joy! He was the pitcher and manager of the Champion Spark Plug team for many years. Duke retired from ball at the age of 69!
Duke enjoyed festivals and polka music in addition to musical shows and was an avid New York Yankees fan. He is survived by daughter J.Ann (Jeff) Borucki, son James, granddaughters Staci Zawierucha and Deanna (Bill) Kline, and two great granddaughters Sophia and Emma.
Family and friends may gather at the Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Road, Toledo, Ohio, 43623, on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, from 9:00 am until 11:00 am, where his funeral service will be at 11:00 am, with Imam Ahmad Deeb officiating. Burial will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
