Melvin Howard Moulton (Punk), 90, passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2024 at Perrysburg Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
He was born January 14, 1934 in Toledo to Irving and Elise (Williams) Moulton. Mel grew up in Northwood, Ohio and graduated from Olney High School.
On October 24, 1953, Mel married Ruth Ilene Snyder. Mel and Ruth raised two children as they moved to several different cities for Mel’s job at Owens-Illinois. The family’s final move was to Bessemer, AL (near Birmingham) where they resided until Ruth passed away on April 11, 2013.
Mel returned to Toledo, his childhood hometown, to marry Mary C Loeffler (Rubliatus) on July 5, 2014.
Mel was an adventurous youth, upgrading used cars to street race and resell. This adventurous nature continued into his adult years as he helped a friend build a 4-person plane from a kit. The two friends and their wives then flew the plane to Florida as a test flight. Throughout Mel’s life, he continued to get his hands greasy tinkering with cars and other vehicles. Mel also enjoyed boating and fishing. He owned several boats and personally maintained them as he did his cars and trucks. Another great love was travel, which he enjoyed during his employment at Owens-Illinois and taking trips to all 50 states with his wife Ruth.
Mel worked at Crown Cork and Seal containers for a short time. Mel then worked for Owens-Illinois at the Toledo West Technical Center where he was involved in the development and testing of the new catalytic converter. Mel later moved his family to Connecticut and Birmingham, Alabama with Owens-Illinois. Mel worked in the maintenance department as maintenance supervisor for the Plastic Products division. This position also included responsibility for purchasing. Mel retired from Owens-Illinois and continued to reside in Bessemer until his move back to Toledo. In Toledo, Mel joined his brother, Ken, being a part-time driver for Yark Automotive, picking up and delivering cars to the dealership.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Mary (Loeffler) Moulton, and his children, Vicky Merritt and Bruce (Brenda); 4 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. His step-children Laurie (Tom) Ryan, John (Sarah) Loeffler and Molly (Doug) Scott, 8 step-granddaughters, and two step-great-grandchildren also survive. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Mel was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother (Francis); Ruth, his wife of 60 years; and brothers, Irving, Merrill, Kenneth and step-brother David.
The family would like to thank the staff of Waite Nightingales Nursing Agency in Napoleon and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their assistance during Mel’s last days.
Memorial services will be held with the family and friends on a future date.
