Matthew Michael McGurk of Toledo, OH, born January 3, 1960, to James and Dorothy (Carroll) McGurk, passed away August 1, 2022, surrounded by family. Matt grew up in Toledo's Old West End, and attended Rosary Cathedral, prior to moving to the south end and attending OLPH. He was a graduate of E.L. Bowsher High School, class of 1978.
Matt coached basketball at Arlington Elementary, during the late '90s and early 2000's. He loved attending all of his kid's school functions and sporting events, he made it a priority to be involved and never miss a game. His grandkids were the light of his life. He had a special bond with them all, he made it known that he wanted to, and expected to, watch his babies. From the time Gabe could talk, he was known as "Da." He was called many things throughout his life, mostly not nice things, but Da was his favorite and what many knew him as.
Matt loved the Los Angeles Rams, Dodgers, and Lakers, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame, and any team that played Ohio State (and he loved to let that be known). He was a man of many words, LOVED to argue, and would do all he could to get the last word in. He was a family man through and through, and loved to listen, support, lecture, offer advice and help out however he could. He loved reminiscing and had stories for days. He would always talk about how he was the "best looking" McGurk.
He was also known to walk to school uphill both ways in 6 feet of snow quite often. He also loved telling people what would help put hair on their chest. Matt loved spending time outdoors with his family. He will be greatly missed by his family, but they are at peace knowing he is now resting peacefully.
Matt was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Michelle Hilfinger, and beloved furbaby Shaq. Matthew leaves behind his wife of 36 years Debra (Burgbacher); daughter, Catherine (Brandon Guerrero); son, Aaron (Melinda); 4 grandchildren, Gabriel, Tanner, Ellie, and James; brothers, Jim (Donna), Tom, Marty (Cindy), Mark, and Mike; brother in law, Neil Hilfinger; along with many nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
The family will receive guests Saturday, August 6, 2022 from 2:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - SW Chapel, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. (419-381-1900).
