Mary L. Starks, age 92, of Toledo, Ohio passed away Tuesday, December 22, 2020. She was born on March 8, 1928 in Covington, Tennessee to the late Porter and Edmonia (Graves) Shelton.
Mary was heavily involved with her church community City of Refuge Ministries - Toledo, formally known as, The Pentecostal Church of God. She was a devote member of the Mother's Board and an Ordained Praying Woman. Mary moved to Detroit, Michigan and opened her home to the children and families in support of the Christian Academy. She drove the bus for the church, taking children to their different school and church functions. Known for her love of singing and vocals, Mary was a part of the Jubilettes, The Petersonettes, and various groups and choirs. After her career at the former Maumee Valley Hospital, Mary worked for Toledo Public Schools as a school bus driver. She later retired, from Toledo Public Schools as a custodian to be care taker for her mother. In her later years, Mary took up making baked good, wedding cakes, crocheting, and was in the process of writing her own book titled: "The Greatest Love Story Ever Told". She will always be remembered for her deep love and passion for the word of God.
Left to cherish Mary's memory is her son, Johnnie (Pearline) Shelton; grandchildren, Jonathan, Jerome (Cassandra), Alicia (Major), Vanard, LaTisha, LaTrina (Avery), and Stephanie; 21 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Milton Jr.; sister, Roberta; and brothers, John, James, Roy, Sam, Eugene, Lawrence, Eddie, and Renzie.
A Celebration of Mary's Life will be held at a later date.
