Mary Louise Smith, formally of Grand Rapids, MI and long time resident of Toledo, OH, passed away on December 12, 2022 at age 101. Beloved daughter of the late Harold and Mary Smith Sr. Sister of Harold Smith Jr. Mother of Judy King. Grandmother of Sonya Newton, Stacy DuBose, Quentin and Enrico King. Great grandmother of Christopher Bryant-Newton and Justice Lance-Butler, and many more. Great great grandmother to many. Aunt of Janice (Andy) Arnold and Phillip Smith.
Mary was a lover of education, and spent over fifty years teaching in two different states. She was born in Mount Pleasant, TN and made her way to Frenchlick, IN where she grew up. At an early age, Mary and her family relocated to Grand Rapids, MI where she taught at Saint Andrew's Catholic School for a portion of her teaching years. Mary's family made their way to Ohio in the early 1970's, where she taught for Toledo Public School system for 35 years. As a young lady, Mary enjoyed listening to music and playing the piano. She spent her time dancing with friends. She was also a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Mary was admired for her strength and her passion for life. She remained very independent into her later years and as a devout Catholic, Mary was an avid parishioner of St. Pius X Catholic Church here in Toledo. She will be greatly missed by her family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in Mary's honor can be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital
Mary will be laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery in Grand Rapids, MI on May 12, 2023 at 1:00 p.m.
