Mary Louise Shaffer

September 30, 1952 — October 11, 2023

Mary Louise Shaffer, 71, passed away on October 11, 2023 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg. Mary was born on September 30, 1952 in Toledo, OH, to parents Roy and Gertrude Shaffer, both who preceded her in death. She was the second of six children and is survived by brothers Robert and Tom, and sisters Janet Kane (Ken) and Carol Holmes (Prentis). She is also survived by nieces Amy and Laura, and nephew Ryan, as well as several great nieces, great nephews and cousins. Mary was preceded in death by her brother, William Shaffer.

Mary attended Wernert Elementary after briefly attending Sherman Elementary. Mary is a 1970 Whitmer High School graduate. She had associate degrees from the University of Toledo. She worked as a library associate for the Toledo Lucas County Public Libraries and in various offices.

Mary was a gifted researcher and writer. She enjoyed genealogy and was able to trace her lineage to the 1600s in England. She spent decades researching Toledo history, and she compiled over fifty notebooks with thousands of entries and pictures of landmarks, businesses, establishments and events in Toledo. She gifted this project to her siblings.

Mary was a regular at local libraries since childhood when books like the Nancy Drew series encouraged her love of reading. She regularly checked out a wide variety of books and enjoyed exploring the Internet to keep up with current events. She also loved doing logic puzzles and word games. Mary had impeccable grammar and spelling skills.

Mary loved music and started collecting records from a young age. Favorite artists include the Beatles, ABBA, April and Nino, the Cowsills and the Carpenters. She also loved figure skating and used to closely follow the Olympics and World Championships.

Mary loved sci-fi and disaster movies. She also enjoyed a lot of old television series, including Laverne and Shirley and Emergency. She enjoyed shopping at Walmart and getting her Dollar Tree hauls. She was a loyal customer of Blair. She enjoyed arts and crafts and used to sew her own clothes.

Mary enjoyed going to Chili's, Bob Evans and Culver's. She loved chocolate and always had a stash of it. She enjoyed family get togethers and made everyone delicious cakes iced with her famous chocolate frosting. Only a Costco chocolate cake could suffice when homemade wasn't possible.

Mary always loved wildlife but recently became enamored with horses. She followed several horse sanctuary groups and was very moved by the animals taken in, and with the kindness of the people caring for them. This brought her great comfort and joy in difficult times.

Mary went out of her way to keep in touch with her siblings, cousins and friends, who already miss her dearly.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Northwest Ohio for making Mary's last weeks more comfortable. Celebrations of Mary's life were private with internment at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
