Mary Paul was born October 14, 1941 in Anderson, Indiana to Paul H. and Mary Jane (Helpling) Mason. After graduating from Anderson High School, she headed to Purdue University to pursue a B.A. degree.
Upon graduating with a degree in Art & Design, she moved to Chicago, where she began a stellar career in marketing and advertising with Young and Rubicam. It was there, working as an advertising executive, that Mary Paul researched the market and helped to develop the famous Armor Hot Dogs advertising campaign. This commercial is considered to be one of the most iconic commercial jingles in the history of advertising. While in Chi Town, she also became a connoisseur of pizza, much to the delight of anyone who visited.
Although she never married, family was always her first priority. After she left Chicago to embrace a slower pace and to be closer to family, she moved to Toledo, Ohio to pursue an advertising and marketing career with Owens Illinois, Toledo Hospital, and then MCO.
She frequently hosted family get-togethers. Her buffet table was always laden with all kinds of goodies, making the eyes of her young nieces and nephews "pop out", much to the consternation of their parents. Who can forget the incredible gourmet scrambled eggs and that year she grilled the Thanksgiving turkey? "Is it done yet?"
She was notoriously known as the family prankster from an early age. This moniker followed her throughout her life, deserved or not! She loved scary movies and the scarier the better. She would frequently invite those nieces, nephews and their friends to "Fright Night." After she had set the scene and the eager participants were totally absorbed in the story, she would sneak outside and appear at the window, terrifying them with her ghostly presence…and then that unforgettable laugh!
Mary Paul was preceded in death by her father Paul H. and her mother Mary Jane. She is survived by her sister Jude Jane Mason Zetting of Brown Deer, Wisconsin, her brother Bruce H. (Judy) Mason of Mesa, Arizona, and her younger brother Douglas S. Mason of Wolcott, Indiana, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and grands.
In accordance with her wishes, no memorial service is planned. Mary Paul wanted no tears shed; only love and laughter shared while remembering the stories of her priceless antics. A lifelong lover of dogs, memorial donations can be sent to Toledo Animal Rescue (https://toledoanimalrescue.org/), the Toledo Area Humane Society (https://toledohumane.org/), or another charity of choice.
To know her was to love her, and she will be sorely missed by everyone whose lives she touched! MP, rest in peace!
