Mary "Peg" Hammons, age 83, of Toledo, passed away Saturday, April 12, 2008 at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center after a courageous fight to survive open heart surgery. Peg was the daughter of John and Katherine (Ficaro) Chaupetta, born on February 7, 1925 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was the last surviving child of all her brothers and sisters. Peg was a loving wife of 47 years to John P. Hammons whom she wed on September 1, 1941. Her greatest joys were her three children and six grandchildren. Known by her grandchildren as "Mim", her deep devotion to her family was known by all who knew her. Famous for her meatballs and spaghetti dinners, Peg's cooking brought her family and friends to the table countless times. Her culinary passion and love of a good book never ended.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband and her brothers and sisters. Peg is survived by her daughter, Cindy (Mike) Taylor-Whalen and their daughter Amy (Russ) Taylor-Pitler, son, John Michael (Donna) Hammons and their children, Grant, Ross and Mara, and son, Mark (Patricia) Hammons and their children, Caitlyn and Jonathon.
The family will receive guests on Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will begin Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
