Mary Ellen Bocanegra

Mary Ellen Bocanegra, age 91, of Toledo, passed away Sunday, August 29, 2021 at Lakes of Monclova with loving family by her side. She was born on May 9, 1930 to Samuel and Leora (Cornell) Hershey in Fayette Co., Ohio. Mary Ellen was a cook for many years for a men's half-way house. She enjoyed traveling, reading, crossword puzzles and watching golf especially Arnold Palmer. Mary Ellen was a fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes and liked watching football with her girls. She loved dancing and music. Mary Ellen was an avid gardener, an excellent cook and baker; something that will truly be missed. She had a great sense of humor, strong in her faith, smile on her face and looked out for others before herself. Mary Ellen looked forward to spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Her spunk, smile, treats and caring nature will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Margarita –Bocanegra-Rodriguez; and infant son, Johnny Bocanegra. Left to cherish Mary Ellen are her sisters, Sue (Larry) Baldwin and Judy Hershey; loving children, William (Tameka) Palmer, Wilford Palmer, Clement (Michele) Palmer, Daisy (Jim) Goff, Rosina Finley, Peter Palmer, Ruth Ann Palmer, Rebecca (Butch) Bocanegra, Galinda Bocanegra, Jessica (Apolito) Vasquez, and Bill (Linda) Herman; 38 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; 1 niece; and 3 nephews.

The family will receive guests on Friday, September 3, 2021 from 3 – 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home – Northwest Chapel, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will begin Saturday, September 4, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Toledo Memorial Park.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Mary Ellen's special granddaughters, Sadallia and Sophia, her nurse, Monique, the nurses and caregivers at Lakes of Monclova and St. Luke's Hospital for all of their extra love, care, and support given to Mary Ellen throughout this journey.
