Marilyn Kaser passed from this life on February 15, 2013, two days before her 78th birthday surrounded by her family. She was born in 1935 in Toledo to Lewis H. Jr. and Mary Barnes. In her early life, Marilyn was an avid sportswoman—a distinguished field hockey player, a bowler, and a markswoman. During high school, she joined a local flying club, earning her pilot's license at 16 and making many solo trips in and out of Franklin Airfield in a J-3 Cub.
Marilyn taught at McKinley Elementary School for 33 years retiring in 2007. Teaching children was one of the great loves of her life. Her dedication to teaching was featured in The Toledo Blade series in 1977 entitled McKinley Room 205, where she summarized her philosophy on teaching: "It's the little puzzled look, the frown, the worry around the eyes that tells you here's a child who doesn't understand and that you'd better do something about it before it's too late, before the child loses interest, before you lose the child." Marilyn continued to volunteer at McKinley until her death. She leaves behind a legacy of educators including a son and daughter who teach at McKinley, and a son who administrates at Keyser Elementary.
Beyond teaching, Marilyn was devoted to her family. She took special joy in giving gifts at birthdays and holidays. In her leisure time she loved playing games around the dining room table, reading, watching classic films, and shopping. When she ventured away from Toledo, it was most often to Disney World where she made many happy memories with her husband, children, and grandchildren.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Ned E. Barnes. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 54 years, Edward; children Edward Jr. (Kristin) Kaser, James (Dawn) Kaser, and Mary (Tony) Pollauf; granddaughters Emilee and Kari Kaser; grandsons Brian (Julie) Kaser, Justin (Maureen) Pollauf, Tyler and Alex Kaser.
Friends and loved ones are invited to join the family for a memorial service to celebrate and remember Marilyn's life at McKinley Elementary School, 3344 Westland Ave, Toledo, OH (enter off Upton Road behind DeVilbiss), on Saturday, March 2, beginning at 2:00pm. The family kindly requests no flowers are sent. Memorial contributions may be made to the McKinley Elementary School Library or the West Toledo Lightweight Football League/Whittier Jets.
