Marianne Szasz Burgos, 81, of Sylvania Twp., passed away on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at Aspen Grove Assisted Living in Lambertville, MI . She was known as "Babi" to her friends and was born on October 1, 1928 in Budapest, Hungary.
Her life was a great adventure. With her father, a retired colonel in the Hungarian army, and her mother a baroness, she was forced to leave everything and flee to Austria when the Soviet Union occupied Hungary after WWII. They lived with other refugees in a barn barracks for 4 years until they were sponsored by the Lutheran World Federation to come to the United States. They ultimately settled in the Toledo area and Marianne graduated from Toledo University with a Bachelor of Science and began her career in blood work. She worked at the Red Cross in Toledo, Riverside Hospital, and after a total of 37 years in the field, retired from Flower Hospital as the Director of the Blood Bank. Marianne loved everything Hungarian, including music, dancing, Hungarian Pulis (sheep dogs), speaking in her native tongue to fellow Hungarian friends, cooking and serving her favorite Hungarian dishes, and especially travelling with her husband, Gabriel, back to her home country.
She was preceded in death by her parents Oszkar and Margit (Collas) Szasz.
She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Gabriel V. Burgos; her cousin, Paul Lukacs, in Romania; her 3 step-children-Rick (Cathy) of Novi, MI; Mary (George) of Ann Arbor, MI; David (Sherri) of Garden City, MI; and 11 grandchildren.
The family will receive guests Wednesday from 2-4:00 p.m. and 6-8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300). Guests may also visit with the family Thursday from 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 3360 Nebraska Ave. Funeral Services will begin Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church, officiating will be Pastor Patrick Bell. Internment will follow at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
