Marian Elizabeth Teadt

May 11, 1922 — May 25, 2014

Marian Elizabeth Helmick Teadt was born to Anna M. and Welby Lee Helmick in Decatur, IL on May 11, 1922. She had two older brothers, Harold (Harry) and Rudolph (Rudy). In 1932, the family moved to south Toledo where she attended Arlington School and graduated from Libbey High School in 1940. Marian was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, on courthouse square, in Toledo.

She attended Davis Business School to become a comptometer operator.

Like so many young women during WWII, Marian worked several jobs, including in the payroll department at, military munitions supplier, Doehler-Jarvis; as a clerk at the Lion Store, in Grey Lady Service at Mercy Hospital and with various groups that prepared bandages and medical supplies. She corresponded with many soldier friends and her brother, Rudy, during the war and with Martin "Bud" Teadt who returned from the European Theater on Memorial Day, 1945 following the Allied victory on May 8th.

Martin and Marian were married on June 22, 1945 at St. Paul's, prior to his anticipated deployment to the Pacific Theater. With the end of that war and before his going into another war, he returned to Toledo and Toledo Color Type to complete his apprenticeship in lithography.

Their son, Michael, was born in August, 1946. In 1952, Martin opened Progress Color Plate Company in downtown Toledo. The couple assisted by several devoted employees operated the lithography and printing business into 1997, following Mr. Teadt's death.

In the early years of marriage, as her close girlfriends were married and began families, the women held monthly get-togethers called "Hen Parties". Surviving members have remained in touch as recently as last week.

Marian's passion for flowers was practiced through her leadership and involvement in The River Road Garden Club for over 50 years and via the Toledo Garden Club Forum. In the 1970's, she and many of her neighbors formed the ad hoc "River Rats" which annually celebrated life on the Maumee River through progressive dinners, open-house gatherings and a cruise on the "Arawanna". Her love of these activities and steadfast devotion to her husband, son, his wife and family, provided a full and rewarding life that spanned 92 years.

She is survived by her son, Michael, daughter-in-law, Karyn and two granddaughters, Morgan and Marlee.

The family will receive guests Friday, May 30, 2014 from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 6:00 p.m. in the Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900).
