Luella Anne Burzlaff

January 30, 1925 — May 4, 2019

Luella Anne Burzlaff (AKA, Betty) was born in Ft. Morgan Colorado on January 30, 1925 to Aaron Alexander (Bud) and Anne (Gabel) Wright. She passed away peacefully at her daughter's home on Saturday, May 4th at the age of 94. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Don, daughter, Diane and brothers Pat and Dale Wright. She is survived by her daughter, Dayle Pugh and brother, Wesley Wright of Dallas, Texas and grandchildren James Stout (Kirsten), Erin Gangway (Matt), Carl Pugh and bonus granddaughters Jessa Cobb and Jennifer Seal (Greg). She has eight great grandchildren.
Betty was a child of the greatest generation - having been raised on a homestead in western Nebraska, she understood the value of hard work and personal sacrifice. She had many stories of working in the beet fields and life without indoor plumbing. The family moved to the mountains of Wyoming following the great depression. There she graduated from high school and attended college. Betty worked for the War Department during WWII. While attending the University of Wyoming in Laramie, she met her husband, Donald F. Burzlaff. They married after the war, and settled into academic life. Betty was a supportive wife and mother - excelling at typing and helping her husband earn advanced degrees. After years as a professor at both the University of Nebraska and Texas Tech, her husband took a position in Africa with the Rockefeller foundation. They lived on a range research station in the middle of the Kenyan bush country for five years. Betty proved to be an excellent administrative assistant - working with one of the first portable Compaq computers available in 1981. Again, Betty had many interesting stories to tell about their travels to Africa and around the world. One of which is finding a cobra curled up under their washing machine.
Betty and her husband retired to Hot Springs, Arkansas. They lived in their home on the Diamondhead golf course for over 20 years. She had many good friends there where she golfed and played bridge. Betty has lived with her daughter, Dayle, in Sylvania for the past 7 ½ years. She was a wonderful mother, and the best cheerleader for Dayle both at home and at church.
There will be a tribute to Betty's life during the regular worship service Sunday, May 12th at Sylvania, First Christian Church, 5271 W. Alexis Road, Sylvania, OH. This Mother's Day service starts at 10:30am. There is coffee hour after church and all are invited to attend. Betty will be buried in Malvern, Arkansas next to her husband and daughter. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the building fund at Sylvania, First Christian Church.
