Loletta R. Clemens, also known as "Grandma Lettuce" by her great-grandkids, passed away at home surrounded by her loved ones on April 11, 2025, in her hometown of Toledo, Ohio. Born on November 3, 1940 to Willard Ray Jr. and Eileen Ray, Loletta lived a life dedicated to her family and to her profession, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, joy, and unwavering love.
Loletta dedicated many years of her life to serving the Toledo Juvenile Court System as the clerk of courts, where she was known for her diligence and commitment to the welfare of the community's youth. A proud graduate of Woodward High School, class of 1958, she carried the values instilled in her during those formative years throughout her life.
She was truly the life of the party, lighting up any room she entered alongside her husband, John David Clemens, who preceded her in death. Their shared love for their family was evident in all that they did. Loletta's fond memories included the joy of owning and operating a pet store earlier in their lives, and the couple shared a deep affection for their many pets. Together, they also enjoyed gardening, dancing, and hosting Bunco parties, fostering connections through games and laughter.
While Loletta was known for her culinary efforts—enjoying the preparation of goulash, banana cake, and ground bologna for her family, even if goulash was not her favorite—her true sustenance came from her role as a devoted family member. She cherished time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, taking immense pride in their accomplishments and well-being.
Her enduring memory is enriched by the vibrant family she leaves behind, including her son Larry Clemens, granddaughters Heather Mercer and husband Eric, Shawna Wishon and husband Matt, Tara Seibert and husband John, Sara Zahradnik and husband Jeff, grandson Jason Baldwin and wife Stephanie, and granddaughter Hannah Clemens, along with thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson, Grayson. Loletta is also survived by her sister Deanna Schneider and husband Dan, and brothers Robert Ray with wife Cheryl and Darrell Ray with wife Janice, along with a host of loving extended family and friends.
Loletta R. Clemens will be remembered for her infectious smile, her love for music, and her ability to bring people together. She has joined her beloved family in eternal rest, including her daughter Rebecca Smith, father Willard Ray Jr., mother Eileen Ray, and sisters Virginia Garard and Linda Cundick, along with her brother Kenneth Ray. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched throughout her life.
At the request of Loletta, there are no services scheduled.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in honor of Loletta be made to Heartland Hospice. 907 W. State A, Fremont, OH 43420 or to Hospice of NW Ohio at hospicenwo.org
