Lia Marie Jelinger, 85, died Thursday morning, December 12, 2013, at Ebeid Hospice Residence at Flower Hospital, Sylvania, OH. She was born March 15, 1928 in Jakarta, Indonesia to Willem Eduard and Apolonia Elizabeth (Snijders) van Bunge. She lived in Indonesia until 1939 when she moved to The Hague, Netherlands. She immigrated to the United States, with her husband and children, in January 1957.
Lia was employed for 15 years and retired from the VA Clinic on Byrne Rd. She volunteered and worked with Special Olympics. She was a foster mother for 20+ infants with the Miami Children's Home. Lia was an avid knitter. She also loved to crochet, garden and tinker with all her electronic toys.
Lia received Sertoma Club's Service to Mankind Award in February, 1979 for volunteer work performed over the years.
Lia is survived by her children, Marjoleine (Mark) Gravley of Ft. Wayne, IN, Conrad Jelinger, Dr. Eric (Chris Querry) Jelinger of Lima, OH, Catharina Bonsel (Joseph) Nusbaum of Ottawa Lake, MI, Sylvia Tuttle (Denzel) Ducat of Whitehouse, OH, Timothy (Kathy) Jelinger and Victoria (Richard) Herman; grandchildren: Carey (Jeffery) Spitler of Temperence, MI, Bryan (Kelli) Jelinger of Temperence, MI, Nicholas Schmidt, Liesebet Gravley of Rutland, ND, Peter Gravley of Bartlesville, OK, Philip (Sara Snedeker) Gravley of Seattle, WA, Lindsay Tuttle of Rockford, IL, Andrew Tuttle of Whitehouse, OH, Rachel (Chris) Martin of Flint, MI, Nathaniel Ducat of Whitehouse, OH, Timothy Jelinger, Jr. of Ft. Myers, FL, Jeffrey Jelinger, Johnathan Jelinger, Abigail Jelinger, Colin Jelinger of Dallas, TX, Clifford Jelinger, Jessica Jelinger of Columbus, OH, Megan Jelinger, Alec Querry of Lima, OH, Tatum Bires of Sylvania, OH; great-grandchildren, Allison and Luke Spitler of Temperence, MI, and Aaron Burfeind; brother, Pieter van Bunge of Arnhem, Netherlands; sisters, Yvonne den Exter of Amstelveen, Netherlands, Annette (Hans) Nieuweboer of Vijfhuizen, Netherlands; and several nieces and nephews, all of the Netherlands. She was preceded in death by her parents and her step-father, Coenraad A.H. Shuak.
Friends may call on Friday, December 20, 2013 from 2 – 7:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo (419-473-0300) with Memorial Services beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Officiating will be her granddaughter Intern Pastor Liesebet Gravley. There will be no interment.
