Leonard F. Hasenfratz

June 11, 1929 — April 14, 2016

Leonard Frank Hasenfratz, age 86, of Toledo, passed away peacefully April 14, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 11, 1929 to Joseph and Beatrice (Romaker) Hasenfratz in Toledo. Len was a 1947 graduate of Central Catholic High School, where he was an avid runner. Tall, thin and fast, Len would happily tell anyone he was "built for speed". A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, he served for two years in the Korean War. In 1955 he married the love of his life, Mary (McNulty) Hasenfratz in Oregon, Ohio. Len worked for the Toledo Edison Company for 35 years, retiring in 1991. Over the span of his career, Len became well-respected in the community by the businesses and people he served. Likewise, Len worked a second job for 35 years as an umpire for various baseball & softball organizations in Northwest Ohio. His love for baseball was second only to his love for his family. The only thing that could keep him off the diamonds was Mother Nature.

Len was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family. He especially cherished his time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. At birthday celebrations and family gatherings, Len would rarely be seen without at least one grandchild on his lap. He was a great story teller, fierce checkers competitor, and the very best lullaby singer. His family brought him great joy, and he instilled in them life lessons that will never be forgotten. Len was a devoted Christian and a member of both Blessed Sacrament and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic churches in Toledo. He loved Mary's cooking and his favorite treats were ice cream, cherry pie, and of course celebratory beer & potato chips after his ballgames.

Len was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph & Beatrice, stepmother Angelica, and brother Kenneth Hasenfratz. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of nearly 61 years, Mary, Children: Jeffrey (Jean) Hasenfratz, Gregory (Teri) Hasenfratz, Allan (Janice) Hasenfratz, Patrick (Robin) Hasenfratz, Tracie (Dodd) Yoder, Brother: Donald (Karen) Hasenfratz, 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive guests from 5-8p.m. on Monday, April 18th, 2016 at Newcomer Funeral Home 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. Toledo (419) 381-1900, with a short scripture service at 7p.m. The funeral service will be held at 10:00a.m. Tuesday April 19th, 2016 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 6149 Hill Ave.,Toledo. Friends and family may visit from 9-10 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery.

In Len's memory, contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice or Our Lady of Lourdes Church building fund. Special thanks to the staff at Heartland Hospice and also to Len's wonderful team of caregivers at Swanton Valley Care Center, who touched our lives more than they will ever know.
