Lawrence (Larry) John Berta, age 79 of Toledo, OH, passed away unexpectedly Thursday August 26th at his residence. Larry was born August 12, 1942 in Streator, Illinois to the late Jack and Emma (Yednock) Berta. During his youth he participated in Boy Scouts and Little League. Some highlights of Larry's childhood consisted of playing the clarinet in the German Band (Die Froeliche Musikantes), they won 1st Place on the Morris B. Sachs Amateur Hour in Chicago (1956). He was the drum major of Streator Township Marching Band before graduating in 1960. Larry was a graduate of Valparaiso University. He went on to serve his country in the Army Reserves for 7 years.
His career began in the Accounting Department. of Owens Illinois in Streator, Illinois. He finished his career as the Comptroller of Owens Illinois for the Southern Hemisphere, until his retirement from their World Headquarters in Maumee, Ohio in 1997. Larry's biggest joy was playing golf, he was an active member of Heatherdowns Country Club for 25 years. Larry and Doris enjoyed spending time at their time share in Hilton Head with many special friends. He was an avid sports fan of The Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, Chicago Bulls and The Fighting Illini.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 47 years Doris (Dennick) Berta. Larry will be greatly missed by his son David (Shannon) Berta and granddaughters Olivia (17) and Peyton (15). He is also survived by two sisters, Linda (David) Mayfield of Madison, Wis., and Sally Seroka of Conroe, TX. Nephew Jon McFerren of Wis., and nieces Susan Allen of Illinois and Kristen Williams of Mississippi.
The family will receive friends from 5-7p.m. Friday September 3 at Newcomer Funeral Home- SW Chapel, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo OH 43614.
