Juan Tello
Juan Tello, age 95, of Toledo passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2005 in his home. He was born June 22, 1909 in Ixtlan, Michoacan, Mexico. He was employed by Maumee Malleable Casting Company retiring in 1972. He belonged to Conn-Weisenberger Post # 587.
Juan entered the Army, October 24, 1942 at Camp Perry, Ohio, and went overseas in January 1943 when he joined the 9th Infantry Division as a replacement. He fought through the Tunisian Campaign. Juan's division then fought through the Sicilian Campaign and after a rest landed on Omaha Beach, D-Day and was successful in cutting the peninsula off from the mainland. His next combat was on Cherbourgh. For this combat he was awarded the Bronze Star. An enemy patrol had broken through the edge of the defensive position and Juan with two other soldiers forced them from their perimeter. He was awarded the Purple Heart. After treatment overseas in various hospitals, he arrived at O'Reilly General Hospital January 2, 1945. Juan was also awarded several additional medals including: 4 Bronze Battle Stars, a Combat Infantry Badge, a Unit Citation Badge, a Good Conduct Medal, and a European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon.
Juan was preceded in death by his wife, Maria. He is survived by his daughter, Martha Tello-Maritsas; granddaughter, Yolanda Gonzalez; great-grandchildren, Maria and Nicholas Symeou and Andrew and Andre Williams; nephew, Frank (Barb) Tello and niece, Theresa (Ray) Castro.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at 1:00 p.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church, 3030 Tremainsville Road. Officiating will be Fr. Steve Schroeder. Interment will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
