Joy Maish, 91, passed away on Thursday February 27, 2014 at The Hospice of Northwest Ohio. She was born Joy Winora Ashley on November 10, 1922, in Eubank, Kentucky to Sadie and Harlan Ashley. She grew up in Detroit, Michigan, and graduated from Cass Tech High School, where she played harp and sang in the Harp and Vocal Ensemble.
Joy attended Olivet Nazarene College in Kankakee, Illinois, where she met Orville L. Maish, Jr. who was studying for the ministry. They were married on June 25, 1943. Their first pastorate was the Toledo Tremainsville Road Church of the Nazarene (1944). Other churches they served in the Toledo area included the Manhattan Blvd. and Northpoint Churches of the Nazarene, and the Heritage Community Church.
Joy's talents as a singer, pianist, and sometime-choir director served churches as well. She encouraged others to develop their musical talents within the church. Even at age 91, she could still play songs from memory and accompany the hymn singing at Luther Haus, where she lived assisted with loving care provided by Leanna DeGroff.
If ever anyone lived up to her name, it was Joy….for she brought happiness to all who knew her.
Joy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Rev. Orville L. Maish, Jr. Referring to their long marriage, their grave marker reads, "66 wonderful years". She is also survived by two daughters, Janet Joy Thomas of Lompoc, CA and Anne Oglevee (and her husband Dave) of Lansdale, PA.; son, Mark Thomas Maish of Novi, MI; 5 grandchildren, Jessica Mitchell (and her husband Matthew), Danelle Thomas, Shelley Thomas, Brad Oglevee (and his wife Hana), and Lauren Oglevee; and 2 great grandchildren, Olivia and Nathaniel Mitchell.
