You were either a friend of Mike Bellfy's, or you hadn't met him yet.
J. Michael "Mike" Bellfy, age 74, of Toledo, passed away peacefully April 17, 2022 with his loving family by his side. He was born in Toledo on February 13, 1948 to Joseph Floyd and Margaret (Nagel) Bellfy. Mike would meet the love of his life during a chance encounter while working at a Thom Mcan shoe store in 1965. After graduating from Whitmer High School in 1966, he married Patricia Ann Kaminski on July 1, 1967 at St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Toledo, the beginning of a fruitful 54-year union that celebrated its golden anniversary in 2017.
After high school and marriage, Mike went on to serve his country proudly in the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1972, overseas aboard the USS Enterprise. His service indulged a love of travel and new experiences, which he would later share with his many friends and family members. The eldest of nine children, Mike was the consummate "family man" — playing an important role in the upbringing of his younger siblings, and always finding a way to the doorsteps of aunts, uncles, cousins and others, no matter where life took them.
No party was complete until Mike stepped into the room. Forever the source of a glowing smile, quick wit and gregarious, tenacious spirit that was allergic to complaint, he left everyone he met with a lasting memory or a funny story. Mike was an avid hunter and fisherman, and loved nothing more than a summer day on Lake Erie. He was a devoted fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Tigers, and his passion for photography filled shelves of albums with scenes from a life well-lived.
He and Patricia welcomed son Joe in 1978, raising their family in south Texas and Toledo. Mike spent his professional career working in the energy industry for companies like Phillips 66 and BASF, retiring from Sunoco in 2008. The many long hours he spent working swing shifts, holidays and weekends provided a rich, fulfilling life for his family.
Mike was actively involved with Toledo branches of the Knights of Columbus and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by siblings, Dennis Bellfy, Mark Bellfy, Angela (Carl) Hill and Roger Bellfy; grandparents, Grace & Joseph Bellfy and Mary & Elmer Beach and dear friend, Sandy Pirwitz. Mike is survived by his loving wife Patricia (Kaminski) Bellfy; son, Joe Bellfy; granddaughter, Olivia Bellfy; siblings, Susan "Susie" (Larry) Rodman, Tom Bellfy, Doug (Sheila) Bellfy and Craig Bellfy; in-laws, Jaye Bellfy and Marcia Edelstein; dear friends and Euchre Club members, Joseph & Glenda Kane, Linda & Dennis Haynes and Dick Pirwitz.
The family will receive guests Friday, April 22, 2022, from 1:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo (419-473-0300). Memorial services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 23 at the same location, followed by interment at Toledo Memorial Park. Services are open to all visitors.
