Joseph W. "G.I. Joe" Achinger, age 73, of Holland, OH, passed away on his birthday, Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Regency Hospital. He was born on May 26, 1945 in Toledo to Joseph H. and Luella (Gallagher) Achinger. He proudly served his country for over 32 years, retiring most recently from the 180th Fighter Air Wing, earning his nickname G.I. Joe for being a career military man. Joe served in the USMC, Army and National Guard with his current rank as a Sergeant Major. He also served two tours in Vietnam, receiving two Purple Heart medals. Joe was a member of various military social clubs such as the AmVets, American Legion and VFW. Joe will be remembered for being honest with his words but yet generous with his intentions.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Judy Achinger; daughter, Brenda; step-children, Phil (Rachel), Connie (Mark), Vern (Ken), David (Vicki), Ron (Debbie) and Don (Brianne); many grandchildren; great-grandchildren and special great-granddaughter, Haley. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his daughter, Holly and sister, Phyllis.
The family will receive guests on Thursday, May 31, 2018 from 2-8:00 p.m. at Newcomer - NW Chapel, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300). His funeral service will be on Friday, June 1, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment to follow in Springfield Township Cemetery.
