Jonathan Winthrop Hansen, lovingly known as Jon, was born on September 19, 1952 in Dubuque Iowa. He passed away peacefully on October 6, 2024 in Toledo, Ohio, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter and unforgettable stories.
Jon proudly served as a Merchant Marine, navigating the expansive waters of the Great Lakes throughout his career. His passion for sailing the Aeolus, his fathers sailboat, mirrored his devotion to his family, whom he cherished deeply. Jon was not only a sailor; he was a storyteller whose vibrant tales would captivate listeners, often punctuated by his well-worn saying, "Why let the truth get in the way of a good story.” His booming voice could resonate miles away, a testament to his larger-than-life personality.
Jon’s interests extended beyond the sea. He found joy in hobbies such as fishing, flying RC planes, riding motorcycles, snowmobiling, and skiing. Each activity was another opportunity for adventure, which he embraced wholeheartedly.
His family was his pride and joy, and he took great pride in his children and grandchildren. Jon is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Susan Hansen, and his children: Lindsey Bohrer and her husband Justin, Robert Hansen and his wife Miranda, and Katherine Hansen along with her significant other Bryce. He adoringly celebrated the lives of his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Lillian, Theodore, Olivia, and Grayson, each of whom brought him immense joy.
Jon was part of a close-knit family, and he is also survived by his siblings: Alex Hansen and his wife Renu, Rebecca Hansen, David Hansen and his wife Dyana, Douglas Hansen and his wife Cathy, and Laurie Saxton and her husband Robert. Additionally, he leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will remember him fondly.
Jon's passing marks the end of an era filled with warmth, adventure, and a heart that embraced everyone. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Jon's wishes were not to have a service at this time.
