Jon Leo Konzen, M.D.,
July 23, 1934--May 17, 2024
Jon L. Konzen, M.D passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 17, 2024. He was just shy of his anticipated 90th birthday milestone. Jon was a complex individual who exhibited a zest for knowledge and a love for his family. Mentally sharp, inquisitive and yet gregarious, he attended Ladyfield School, Central High School, and the University of Notre Dame (Member of the Blue Circle Honor Society). He attended Medical School at the University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario Canada. It was here that he met his beloved wife--of 55 years-- Claudette (nee Parent). This dynamic duo jointly furthered their education with Medical Residencies and Masters in Public Health Administration at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor). His medical education was accompanied at the same time by enlistment in the U.S. Army with the achieved rank of Captain. During this time period, he and his wife had 5 children. With completion of his education in Occupational Medicine, Jon served as Medical Director for the Ford Motor Company and later, Medical Director for Owens-Corning Fiberglas (Toledo, Ohio). In his early training he had a keen interest in hearing preservation. He retired in 1994 as a Corporate Vice President of Medical Affairs for Owens-Corning Fiberglas after serving 26 years with that company.
The next part of his life was one of adventure with his wife, Claudette. The couple traveled extensively to their special cottage on Remi Lake in Moonbeam, Ontario--where they could enjoy beautiful sunrises and sunsets; sail; and putter in both workshop and garden. They were also hosts to a multitude of grandchildren (15) and great-grandchildren (6). In early retirement, he and his wife cruised to Alaska; through the Panama Canal, and toured the Eastern Maritime provinces of Canada. They enjoyed also European travel including England, Germany, France, Belgium and Spain. In his later years, Jon and his wife were happy to get away to a little respite at Pine Canyon Lake in Angola, Indiana. Along with his wife Claudette, Jon also served in a closely-knit Catholic Service Group--Teams of Our Lady--out of Detroit, Michigan.
Jon was gregarious, but also had a quiet introspective soul. He enjoyed getting to know people. He was generous to a fault and loved learning. He truly lived vicariously through the adventures of his family who he was extremely proud of. With the passing of his wife, Claudette, in 2014, he became an ardent supporter and champion of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was outwardly unassuming--yet loved the banter of family and friends. Most
characteristically, he fostered and promoted an ongoing love for learning personally and in others. His memory remains ever-present. He was preceded in death by his parents Juanita and Donald J. Konzen; and his wife Claudette (nee Parent) Konzen. He is survived by his sister, Ann Knapp (Charles) of Georgetown, Kentucky and his own 5 children--Jon P. Konzen, DO (Tan); Michael J. Konzen (Julie); Benedict S. Konzen, MD; Anne Marie Cardilino (Nicholas); and Charles M. Konzen (Patricia). He will be remembered further by 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Funeral mass is to be held Monday, June 3, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Church (5856 Heatherdowns Blvd, Toledo, Ohio) with interment later this summer in Kapuskasing Cemetery, Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada.
The family requests that any remembrances be directed to the Little Sisters of the Poor.
