John M. Sheets, Sr. age 86, of Maumee, Ohio passed away March 22, 2017 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg, surrounded by his loving family. He was born February 28, 1931 in Toledo to Percy "Fred" and Anna (Reuter) Sheets. John was a 34 year member of Teamster Local 20. He was a member of the Masonic Triad/Barton Smith Lodge #613 and served as past Worshipable Master 32 degree, and also a past member of the Eastern Star Triune #344. John was an active member of the Margaret Hunt Senior Center and Maumee Senior Center where he sang with the Senior Center Choir. He was a past president of the Lucas County Senior Nutrition Counsel and served on the advisory board for the Area Office on Aging. John also volunteered for the R.S.V.P. Patrol for the Area Office on Aging. John and Marie received many awards of recognition for their countless hours of volunteerism. John was a gracious man, even donating one of his kidneys to his son, John in 1985. John and his wife fostered 36 children for many years. He was a former member of Epiphany Lutheran Church and most recently was a member of Community of Christ Lutheran Church. He enjoyed many years at Round Lake, Reading, Michigan.
John is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marie Sheets; son, John M. Sheets, II; daughter, Ellen (David) Nowak; grandsons, Michael (Jennifer) Nowak and Brent (Katie) Nowak; great-grandsons, Matthew Nowak, Mason Nowak and Christopher Nowak; brother, Kenny Sheets; and sister, Sally Waterman. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, James Sheets and sisters, Betty Jacobs and Jean Peters.
The family will receive guests Sunday, March 26, 2017 from 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home - SW Chapel, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. (419-381-1900) where a Masonic Service will be held Sunday at 7:00 pm. A Celebration of John's Life will begin Monday at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or Community of Christ Lutheran Church, Whitehouse, Ohio in John's memory.
