John Edward Rathburn

John Edward Rathburn, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in Toledo, Ohio, on January 2, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on January 13, 1942, in Toledo, he was the son of Clifford and Dorothy (Sindel) Rathburn, both of whom preceded him in death.

John's career as an electrical engineer saw him make significant contributions during his time at Comanche Peak, from which he retired in 1992. Beyond his professional life, John proudly served his country in the United States Army, Marines, and Navy during the Vietnam War. His commitment to service continued long after his military days; he was an active member of the American Legion Baker Post in Wauseon and held membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

John was not only known for his professional achievements but also for his passions outside of work. He enjoyed working on cars and could often be found fishing, watching old westerns, and cheering on his grandchildren during their activities. 

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Kathleen L. Rathburn, and a legacy defined by love and family. He is survived by his daughters, Jennifer (Richard) Besques, Joanna (Jason) Thomas, and Dana Riggs, as well as his son, Johnny (Peggy) Rathburn. John took immense pride in his grandchildren: Denise Grover, Danielle Grover, Elizabeth Vesques, Leah Slagle, Lilly Gibson, Chelise Rathburn, Michael Riggs, Aubrey Gareau, and Dominique Gareau, along with ten great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy.

Visitation for John Edward Rathburn will take place on January 8, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, Northwest Toledo, located at 4150 W Laskey Rd, Toledo, OH 43623. This will be followed by sharing of memories at 5:00 PM at the same location. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in John's name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. John will be remembered fondly by all who knew him, as a man of integrity, creativity, and unwavering dedication to his family and country.
