John R. Mierzwiak

August 12, 1957 — January 3, 2025

Petersburg, Michigan

On Friday January 3, 2025, our husband, father, papa, son, brother, and friend passed away peacefully with his family by his side at Hospice of NW Ohio Flower campus. John Robert Mierzwiak was born on August 12, 1957, to Robert and Betty (Lenz) Mierzwiak.

John was the first born of seven children. John grew up in a quiet West Toledo neighborhood adjacent to St. Catherine's, where he attended grade school. John graduated from St. Francis DeSales High School in 1975, and the University of Toledo in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

After a couple of years working at McDonald's, John spent the remainder of his career at Toledo Hospital retiring in early 2023 as a Lieutenant in the Security Department after 46 years. During John's time at McDonalds, he met the love of his life, Mary Kay Klosowski who he married on March 18,1977. Together they proudly raised two children, Eric (Holly Snell) and Angela. In 1993 the family moved to Petersburg, where they raised horses, pigs, chickens and bees and enjoyed the "country-life".

John's interests included cooking, coaching, boating, camping, hunting, fishing, and watching Michigan Football, where he was a renowned chef at all the tailgates. John enjoyed watching the exploits of Eric and Angela on the gridiron, hardwood and diamond during their careers at Ida High School and Angela prowling the sidelines as an athletic trainer at U of M. In later years, John coveted his time with his 2 grandsons, Blake and Colton. Who are writing chapters of their own, hunting, fishing, academically and playing on the Monroe County Athletic fields. The mere mention of the boys caused John to light up and regale you with their latest adventure.

John was well known for his generosity, often passing out honey and coffee cake to all of his friends and also making homemade kielbasa with his brother Tom. John is well remembered for his sense of humor which he kept even during the dire times of his illness, always willing to trade a barb.

John and Mary Kay are devoted members of the Church on Strayer. In his last days John expressed that he was looking forward to being welcomed by Jesus into his eternal home.

John is survived by his wife, Mary Kay Mierzwiak; son, Eric (Holly Snell) Mierzwiak; daughter, Angela Mierzwiak; grandsons, Blake and Colton Mierzwiak; parents, Robert and Betty Mierzwiak; brothers, Jim (Carolyn) Mierzwiak and Tom Mierzwiak, sisters, Ann (Steve) Daniels, Cathy (Matt) Romstadt, Susan Schnapp and Julie Mierzwiak; father-in-law, Frank Klosowski; his beloved Tennessee Walker, "Spencer"; many nieces and nephews along with many dear and loyal friends who will miss him very much.

Preceding John was his mother-in-law, Julie (Mieczkowski) Klosowski; grandmother, Elizabeth Lenz and all of his grandparents.

The family asks in lieu of flowers, please donate to Dundee Baseball; please make checks payable to Eric Mierzwiak. As a tribute to John’s love for the sport and the community, his family is embarking on a meaningful initiative to dedicate a baseball field in his honor. Those who knew him understand how fitting this tribute is, as it embodies John’s spirit and commitment to fostering future generations of players.
