John E. Merrick, age 92, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at The Sylvania Care and Rehab Center. On May 11, 1917 he was born to Leroy and Irene (Monroe) Merrick in Toledo, Ohio. On July 19, 1941 he married Jewel (Stevens) Merrick in Toledo, Ohio. John worked at Doehler-Jarvis for 38 years as a mill wright later retiring in 1974. He was a loving and supportive husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. John was very gifted with his construction skills, having built two homes over the years for his family with his own hands. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church for 39 years where he was very involved in the church activities.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Jewel; children, Beverly Lawson, Tom (Terri) Merrick, Lynn Hardy, Bob (Beth) Merrick, Pastor Larry (Karen) Merrick; 20 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; two sister's, Ethel Rozinski and Louise Williams. Preceding him in death are his parents; two sisters; six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive guests Friday from 3-8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will be Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Emmanuel Baptist Church, 4207 W. Laskey Rd. Officiating will be Pastor Bruce Snyder. Interment will follow in Toledo Memorial Park.
