John Bartholomew Matesz, 88, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away Sunday, December 6, 2020. He was born at his parents' home in Toledo on November 16, 1932. His parents were Frank and Anna Matesz, immigrants from Hungary.
John was an incredibly kind man. Coworkers called him "Father John," because of his propriety, kindness and patience. This was ironic because, when he was a youngster, his mother dreamed of him being a priest. Instead, he became an industrial electrician, repairing, troubleshooting, and wiring machines of all kinds. He was retired from Owens-Illinois.
He was a Jack-of-all-trades who prided himself in taking care of and repairing his home and possessions including cars, appliances, radios, and more despite having limited use of his left arm. More significantly, he was the quintessential father and head-of-household who daily assured his family was provided for, to the very end. He was meticulous, attending to details others ignored, and always strived to do what was good, proper, and thoughtful, in his eyes. John also volunteered his time and labor for maintenance service at Good Shepherd and King of Glory Lutheran Churches.
Honoring and cherishing John's memory are his two sons, Don (Tracy) and Ken (Patty); grandchildren Sarah and Aaron (Christina); great-grandchildren Elek and Eliza; and many nephews and nieces. John was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, who passed away July 4, 2020 and his sister, Rose Simpson.
