John E. "Pops" Hill, age 76, of Toledo, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center with his family by his side. He was born on August 1, 1941 to Harry and Carrie (Rodney) Hill in Toledo. From a young age, John started working for the MetroParks in the Toledo area, retiring after 35 years of dedicated service. When he wasn't working he enjoyed fishing, playing Bingo, attending auctions, watching baseball games and old cowboy movies. His favorite pastime after retirement was socializing and eating; his outgoing personality and his distinguishable laugh is what attracted people to him. Most precious to him was watching his grandchildren grow into young men and women; they brought him so much happiness. John's family will remember him for being a humble, simple and a hard-working family man.
Left to cherish are his sons, John R. (Goldie), James E. (Shannon) and Kevin A. Hill; grandchildren, Robert, Juan, Anthony, Tony, Jessalena, Ashley, James II, Stephanie, Kenneth, Kristeen, Andrea and Kyle; many precious great-grandchildren and many additional relatives including sisters in law, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Mary Jo Hill; infant son, Scottie Hill; siblings, Willard and Rosie and his beloved canine companion, Shiloh.
The family will receive guests on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 and Wednesday, September 27, 2017 from 2-8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300). Lutheran Church, 710 Buckeye St. (corner of Erie and Buckeye), where there will be visitation from 11:00 a.m. until time of service. Officiating is Pastor Donald Weiss.
