John Harris, Jr.

John Harris, Jr., 90, of Toledo, OH passed away October 20, 2014. He was one of eight children born to John M. and Sara Jane Harris in Lawrenceburg, TN on November 6, 1923.

John, also known as Junior, married Ruth Boyd on December 21, 1945, and had two children. They moved to Toledo in 1952. Even after 62 years, he regarded Tennessee as home. John and Ruth celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary before her passing in 2011. He worked for Hausmann Steel Co for 36 years.

He was a quiet, gentle man, soft spoken, kind, and loving. Hard working, John always put family first. He was so very generous with his time, available to listen, give assistance with projects, and babysit the grand- and great-grand kids.

Next to family, John's great joy was working the soil. His vegetable and fruit gardens were second to none. John's flower beds were spectacular. By passers would stop and marvel at his green thumb. John was modest but loved the compliments.

John was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Travis; brother, Odas and sister, Nella Mae Wilson. He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Juanita and Rod Kesler; daughter-in-law, Kathy Harris; grandchildren, Kelly (Mark) Schultz, Tammi Durco, Kevin (Jenni) Harris; great grandchildren, Erica, Katie, Kelsie, Brianna, Kaylee, Thomas, Alayna; brothers, Herbert (Bessie), Gale (Joyce), and sisters, Marion, Helena (Edward), and Naomi.

The family extends a deep heartfelt Thank You to the compassionate and loving staffs of Waterford at Levis Commons Assisted Living and ProMedica Hospice. You all made John's last years very special.

The family will receive guests from 5-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900). The Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday. Interment will follow at Fish Cemetery, Pemberville, OH.
