John R. Hakius, age 98, of Toledo, passed away a day after his 98th birthday on October 26, 2017 in Kingston Care Center in Sylvania. He was born on October 25, 1919 to Fred Jacob and Elizabeth (Boelter) Hakius in Toledo. He attended Macomber Vocational School. John was married to Joanne (Saalfield) Hakius, the love of his life, from May 25, 1957 until her death on August 23, 1965. John was an accomplished artist. He used his many artistic talents in a long career at the Lion Store. He retired from the Lion Store after 37 years, many of those years serving as the commercial art and display manager for all of the Lion Store locations in Toledo. John enjoyed golfing with his younger brother, Fred, in the Bay View Seniors golf league until they were both in their 90's. John was a Detroit Tigers fan, enjoyed traveling with Elder Hostel and loved going to singles-dances.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth and Lucille Hakius; nephew, Fred "Rick" Hakius, Jr.; sister-in-law, Paula (Wright) Hakius and longtime friend, Theresa Nesbitt; . Left to cherish his memory are his brother, Fred R. Hakius, Sr.; nieces, Nancy (Greg) Randolph and Jacalynn Hakius; great-nieces and nephews, Tricia (Mike) Seabolt, Carolyn (Brian) Hughes, Allyson (Ben) Wichner and Kyle Hakius; six great-great-nephews and one great-great-niece.
At his request the graveside service will be private in Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
Memorial Contributions may be made in his memory to the donors favorite charity.
John's family would like to thank his health care providers at Kingston Care Center in Sylvania and Ohio Living Hospice for their loving care and support, as well as his wonderfully caring neighbors at Valley Stream Apartments.
