John E. Haffner

January 11, 1930 — February 21, 2022

John Emery Haffner, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully at Spring Meadows nursing home on February 21, 2022. "Big John" was born on January 11, 1930 to the late Euel and Edith Haffner.

He married Joan C. Bush on July 1, 1949. John went to work at LOF, retiring in January 1979 after 30 years of service. Throughout his life he stayed active by being a tinkerer and a handyman. He liked having a workshop and working with his hands. He was a sociable person who liked square dancing, playing cards and participating in the various costume parties that were hosted in our basement. He bowled in leagues at RCR with our neighbors and played some softball. In his post-retirement years, he tried his hand at golf, mostly at Tamron GC, where he also worked on the maintenance crew for 25 years. He enjoyed perch and walleye fishing and over the years he owned several boats to get out and get 'em. He built a cottage on Rose Lake for the family to enjoy swimming and water skiing on weekends. Later, he started traveling and camping - beginning with a pickup and slide-in camper and moving up to a 5th wheel camper. A lifelong Buckeye fan, later in life, John's typical greeting was most likely - "are you a Buckeye?" John was a member of Epiphany Lutheran Church and later Flanders Road Church of Christ.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his 2nd wife, Sharon "Kaycee" Haffner; sisters, Virginia (Rex) Williams, Bonnie (Landis) Toth; brother, Kenneth (Mary) Haffner.

He is survived by son, Nelson (Peggy) Haffner; daughters, Dianne (Jim) Zumbrunn and Sandra (Jerry) Drew and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
