John G. Rust, age 97, of Toledo, Ohio passed away Thursday, April 11, 2013 at The Glendale Assisted Living. He was born October 10, 1915 in Coweta, OK to William Henry and Helen Ray (Guthrie) Rust. John served in the US Army Air Force as a Waist Gunner, flying various missions over Germany at the end of WWII. John was educated at the University of Virginia and also received an LLB Degree. He was involved in various law partnerships and later became an independent lawyer. John was known as a very tenacious lawyer and often represented clients sometimes without compensation, because he believed in their causes. He was a lover of ideas, a humanist and a lover of democracy. John was a devoted member of the Democratic Party. He ran for City Council and for the Toledo Board of Education. John was a member of First Unitarian Church for 53 years. He was an inveterate skier who enjoyed downhill skiing and took many trips to Colorado and Northern Michigan. John was still skiing in his 90's.
Thanks are due to John's legal guardian, Paul Giha, friends and ministerial staff at First Unitarian Church, the staff at The Glendale, and John's friends and staff at the Westmoor Retirement Apartments, all of whom provided such kind care in his later years.
John is survived by a number of cousins including Katherine and Tyler (Junko) Rust of Orinda, CA.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at First Unitarian Church, 3205 Glendale Ave, Toledo, Ohio 43614. Memorials can be sent to First Unitarian Church or The Glendale.
