John Edward Barnes, passed away on June 30, 2016, having lived 90 years on this earth. He was born October 7, 1925 to Ross and Dorothy Barnes in eastern Indiana. He had an older sister, Jane. They eventually settled in Findlay, Ohio. John served in the Navy in WWII, and then started a long, successful career as an architect. He married Patricia Lou Shook in 1953 and they raised four children. John had many interests in his life including Boy Scout Leadership, swimming, golf, collecting things, a love of nature, and a love of ice cream. He was active in Zion United Methodist Church for many years in Toledo, Ohio, and later Park Congregational Church in Toledo and Parkway United Church of Christ in Winston-Salem, NC. John was a kind and peaceful man who, apparently, never uttered a "swear word," (other than the word "snarlfrockle," a word of his own invention).
He will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, four children; David (wife Nancy Barnes), Mark Barnes, Julie (husband, Chuck Hixenbaugh) and Sarah Barnes, and three grandchildren; Blair (husband, Kevin Bomar), Amanda Barnes, and Ross Barnes.
Thank you to all at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Center. And thank you to Café Arthurs and Cagney's Kitchen for their kindness to John in his last years.
The family will receive guests on Friday, July 8, 2016 from 10-11:00 a.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900). The Memorial Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment will be at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
Native American Prayer
I give you this one
thought to keep-
I am with you still - I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the
morning's hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that
shine at night.
Do not think of me as gone -
I am with you still -
in each new dawn.
