John Marion Davenport, age 82 of LaSalle, Michigan passed away Saturday, June 19th, 2010 at Ebeid Hospice. He was born October 3rd, 1927 to Marion and Kitty (Cheek) Davenport in Calvin, Kentucky. John joined the Army Air Corp and was stationed in Germany where he met and married his wife of over 60 years, Thea (Dercho) Davenport. He later re-enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War as a Navigator. Following his time in the military he worked for Chevrolet Toledo (GM Powertrain) until he retired in 1987. After retirement he enjoyed traveling a great deal with his wife, taking cross country trips and cruises. The two of them had many happy years doing this together.
There are many things worth mentioning about John, but his sense of humor stands out the most. He always had a joke to tell or a funny story that would make you laugh. How he knew so many we will never know. John didn't mind poking fun at himself either, like telling about building his entire house and then discovering his level wasn't accurate or putting gasoline in an oil stove and how it resulted in a fire.
John never quit learning new things. He was learning new languages well into his seventies and was an avid reader and crossword puzzle enthusiast. John believed in keeping his mind sharp. He helped teach his grandsons what it meant to work, save, trust and to live a quiet, simple life. John taught them to camp, ride a mini bike, sharpen a lawnmower blade, plant a garden and to fix something that was broken instead of buying another. He also showed them that a sense of humor can help you get through life's hardest times.
He is survived by his wife, Thea "Terry"; daughter, Ellie (George) Segur of Toledo; brothers, Gene (Betty) and Ken; 4 grandsons, Jathan Segur of Phoenix, Arizona, Jonathan (Claudia) Segur of Toledo, Jameson (Rita) Segur of Sylvania and Jeff (Dian) Segur of Cygnet, Ohio; one great-grandson, Benjamin Segur.
