Joel J. Thompson, age 81 of Toledo passed away Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He was born October 26, 1929 to James Plummer and Annie (Butler) Thompson in Collinwood, Tennessee. Joel worked at various manufacturing companies for 45 years and retired after 20 years of service from General Motors. He was an avid and devoted Nascar fan, enjoyed all aspects of cars, loved traveling, visiting Daytona beach and spending time with his family.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 59 years, Evelyn (Howard) Thompson; children, Sherry (John) Burks, Debbie (Ray) Tobin, Charles (Patti) Thompson and Pamela (Charles) Neumeyer; grandchildren, Vickie (Jeff) Layman, Alison (Ed) Mothershed, Joey and Connor; great-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Brandon and Makkenzie; sister, Florene (Joel) Brewer; brothers, Ralph (Joy) and Gene (Gladys) Thompson. In addition to his parents, Joel was preceded in death by his grandson, Joshua Neumeyer; brothers, Charles Butler and Robert Thompson.
The family will receive guests Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will begin in the funeral home on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. Officiating will be Pastor Matt Coutcher. Interment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
