Joan Therese Wassermann

January 10, 1930 — May 7, 2022

Joan Therese Wassermann passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2022, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Toledo, Ohio. Joan was born on January 10, 1930, in Toledo, Ohio to Theodore Christian and Anastasia Cutcher Wassermann. The fifth of six children, the family lived in east Toledo on Raymer Boulevard and Vinal Street. Joan attended St. Louis and St. Thomas grade schools. She was graduated from St. Francis High School in Tiffin Ohio, a boarding school, on June 1, 1948. As a very young child, Joan vividly recalled how much she enjoyed playing with her paper dolls. She also remembered her father having to stand in line for food as the Great Depression hit Toledo.

At St. Francis High School she enjoyed volleyball, tennis and singing in the Glee Club as her favorite after school activities. A few years after graduating from St Francis, Joan went to visit her sister, June Bishop in San Jose, California to help care for June's young family. While visiting in California, Joan attended The Dental Nurses Training School, and graduated with a Dental Assistant Certification.

Returning to Toledo, Joan worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Thornton Dixon and then Dr. Thomas Bowers until her retirement in 1995.

As an adult, Joan enjoyed crocheting, going to movies (especially "spooky" ones), playing volleyball with her siblings, and listening to radio shows before television became common. She was a President Kennedy supporter, and also believed Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a great leader.

In addition to working in the service industry helping people with their dental hygiene, Joan served her siblings by spending a lot of her spare time babysitting her many nephews and nieces.

Affectionately known as Aunt Jo, she would give her siblings and their spouses a chance to have some time to themselves as she entertained her nieces and nephews with card games and board games, notably marathon Monopoly games. She is remembered as a joyful person, quick to laugh, and a fun person to be around by her nieces, nephews and friends.

A devoted Catholic, Joan volunteered at Blessed Sacrament Church in her retirement years, helping wherever needed.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore Christian and Anastasia Wassermann, her siblings June Bishop, Mary Carleen Henning, Wilmer J. (Bill) Wassermann, Bernard Wassermann, and Patricia Wassermann. She was also preceded in death by her nieces and nephews Paul and Kathleen Bishop, Jean Henning Miller, Larry Henning and Terry Henning.

Surviving nieces and nephews are Molly Wassermann, David Wassermann (Kelley), Gretchen Olszak (Peter), and Mary Wassermann, along with several great nieces and nephews.
