Joan Ann Zielinski, age 76, a lifelong resident of Toledo, passed away Wednesday, March 21st, 2012 at Heartland of Waterville. She was born June 8th, 1935 to Leo F. and Angela B. (Erdman) Zielinski in Toledo. Joan was a graduate of Calvin M. Woodward High School, Class of 1953. She was a talented athlete, playing every sport in school. Joan went on to coach track and gymnastics for the Polish Falcons. She began working at Toledo Edison at the age of 18 running the switchboard and retired in 1992 after 39 years as an Executive Secretary.
Joan was a dedicated supporter of the GLASSMEN Drum and Bugle Corps, often traveling with the group as a chaperone all over the country. During her involvement with the Corps, Joan served 2 five year terms as president. She often mentioned how grateful she was for the many memories and lasting friendships she developed with the members over the years. Joan was also an avid fan of the University of Toledo, Lady Rockets, having season tickets so she never missed a game.
In addition to playing and coaching sports, Joan enjoyed going to Toledo Hornets hockey games at the Sports Arena, earning her the title, "The Queen of section 105" from Tom Loomis, a Sports Writer for the Blade.
Joan was an avid reader and also enjoyed the challenges of difficult crossword puzzles. Growing up in a large polish family, Joan developed a love for polish music, polka parties and of course, the wonderful polish food. She was proud of her heritage and cherished the many memories. Joan was also a talented seamstress making anything from clothing to furnishings.
Never having children of her own, Joan spoiled her godchildren and all the children of her family and friends. She will be remembered for her quick wit, her warm smile and her ability to make you want to try harder to succeed.
In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her only sister, Arlene B. Schubargo and brother-in-law, John E. Schubargo. She leaves to cherish her memory, many extended family members and dear and special friends.
The family will receive guests Tuesday, March 27th from 2-8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. (419-381-1900). A Mass of Christian Burial will begin Wednesday, March 28th at 10:00 a.m. at Regina Coeli Catholic Church, 530 Regina Parkway, with viewing 1 hour prior at the church.
Officiating will be Fr. James Auth. Interment will follow at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
