Jewel B. Merrick, age 97, went home to be with our Lord and Savior on October 3, 2017 at Hospice of Lake Cumberland, with family by her side. She was born on February 6, 1920 to Everett and Bessie (McCurdy) Stevens in Toledo. On July 19, 1941, Jewel married the love of her life, John E. Merrick. She was a hairdresser for many years, owning her own salon in her home. Jewel attended Grace Baptist Church in Somerset, KY after moving to live with her daughter in Eubank, KY. Her desire was to serve the Lord, wherever she was. When living in Toledo Jewel attended and taught Sunday school at Emmanuel Baptist Church. Her hobbies were traveling with her husband, enjoying family, grandchildren, cooking, crocheting and being with her Christian friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 69 years, John Merrick; son, Thomas Merrick; several great-grandbabies and 2 sisters and 4 brothers. Jewel is survived by her loving children, Beverly Lawson, of Eubank, KY, Lynn Hardy, of Crossville, TN, Robert (Beth) Merrick, of Sylvania, OH, Rev. Larry (Karen) Merrick, of Shepherdsville, KY; daughter-in-law, Terri Merrick, of Toledo; 20 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive guests on Monday from 2 – 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will begin Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 4207 W., Laskey Rd., Toledo, OH, with visitation in church from 12 – 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Toledo Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the church, Grace Baptist Church, Somerset KY or Hospice of Lake Cumberland.
