Jean T. Ward

March 8, 1934 — July 16, 2012

Jean Thomas Ward, 78, of Maumee, Ohio, passed away on July 16, 2012. He was born on March 8, 1934 to the late Clarence (CB) and Agnes Ward in Detroit, Michigan.

Jean served in the United States Navy and received his Bachelor's degree with a double major in City Forestry and Park Management from Michigan State University.

Jean was a tremendous contributor to the Toledo community, and an ambassador of conservation. He had a passion and dedication to protecting, preserving and improving natural areas for all to enjoy. Jean enjoyed golfing and spending time with friends including great folks from the Rotary Club, American Legion, Potluck Group and the Shrimp Club.

Jean's career started in forestry, where he worked with the city of Toledo. In 1966, Jean was hired by the Toledo Area Metroparks, becoming Director in 1985 and retiring in 2001. Jean was also Founding Director of the Stranahan Arboretum. He made many significant contributions to the Toledo area and the State of Ohio, where Jean's work will positively impact millions of people for generations to come. In 2009, Jean was inducted into the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association Hall of Fame and later, received a Lifetime Achievement Award. While the accomplishments of his professional life were rewarding, he felt his biggest triumph was the family he created with his wife, Janet George Ward. He was rich with family and our love will continue to grow with each new day.

He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Sybil, son Justin and his brother Pat Ward. Jean's love and humor will be greatly missed by his wife, Janet George Ward and their daughters; Semia Ward Downs (Ken Downs); Marcia Ward (Tim Johnson); Marilyn Moyer-Ward (Ted Moyer); Jill Pfeiffer-Ward (Jennifer); Nekko Ward Shefferly ( Timothy Shefferly); his siblings Mary Catherine Fall, Bill Ward (Shelley); along with his grandchildren, Nathan Downs (Devon), Becky Foster, Alison Boschert-Downs (Kevin Boschert), Jacob Reer, Noah and Adrienne Johnson, Burke and Quinn Shefferly and Nikko Pfeiffer-Ward.
