Jay R. Smith, age 71 of Toledo, passed away on Wednesday, November 07, 2012 with his loving family by his side. He was born on August 18, 1941 to James and Wilma (Blanchard) Smith in Duo, West Virginia. Jay proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and he was formerly an active Mason with his home lodge. Jay received his Masters Degree from the University of Toledo where his concentration was in political science. He was a former police officer for 14 years with the Toledo Police Department and following his departure from the police department he worked for the Ford Motor Company in Maumee, retiring in 2007. Jay also taught journeyman classes at Owens Community College. His family will remember him as a loving and giving man who was very passionate about life and always had a great personality and sense of humor.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Penny G. (Neiswender) Smith; children, Theresa (Doug) Spencer, Jeff (Debbie) Smith, David (Sally) Smith and Chris Smith; 11 grandchildren and sisters, Rachael Adkins and Ester (Arthur) Daubert. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his siblings, George Smith, Wilma Berry and John Smith.
The family will receive guests from 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. (419-381-1900). Funeral Services will begin in the funeral home at 6:00 p.m.
