Janice K. Schemenauer

November 26, 1938 — September 8, 2022

Janice Katherine (Hagman) Schemenauer, 83, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on September 8, 2022. She was born at East Side Hospital in Toledo, Ohio November 26, 1938 to Ralph "Doc" and Gene Hagman. Janice attended Toledo Public Schools, graduating from Waite High School in 1956. She proudly marched in the Waite High School Marching Band and performed with the Concert Band. Janice's passion for music spanned a lifetime, playing the french horn with The University of Toledo Marching Band, Toledo Symphony Pro-am, Polish American Concert Band, Maumee Community Band, Vermillion Band, and The Patriots in Elyria, Ohio. Janice spoke often of the memorable duets she played with her friend and high school classmate, John Wilson. Janice enjoyed the outdoors and loved her visits flying in to Meta Lake in NW Ontario, Canada to fish; taking the Amtrak Auto-train on her visits to Naples, FL; and, traveling abroad. But most of all, Janice relished her time at her home on the shores and islands of Lake Erie in Huron, Ohio. Most summers and holidays, were spent in Huron hosting large family gatherings, bon fires, trips to the Pied Piper for ice cream and long visits with her cousin Kathleen Floyd. She was an avid cyclist, runner, and triathlete. Janice was also very involved with the American Turners in Toledo, having served as the Recording Secretary for many years, organized and operated the children's summer camps at Oak Shade Grove for many years and volunteered at the annual German American Festival. Janice also attended several national tournaments with the Turnerettes. Janice's activities were many, her fondest being her years as a scout with the Girl Scouts of America, later becoming a camp counselor at Camp Libbey.

After graduating from the University of Toledo, Janice spent time with the National Teacher Corps., at Washington School. She taught at the local migrant camps in the summers, and also taught at Lark Lane, The Opportunity Kindergarten, Good Shephard School and in the Toledo Public School district at Longfellow, Gunckel, Stewart, and the Old West End Academy, when she retired in 2006. Janice was also a cross country and track coach at Macomber Whitney Vocational School. She earned many degrees and certifications in education from Mary Manse College, The University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University and The University of Findlay. Janice attained her Master's Degree in Education from The University of Toledo.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister-in-law, Patricia Hagman. Janice is survived by her children, Ted Schemenauer, Susan (Chris) Hallett, and Frank (Tricia) Schemenauer; Grandchildren, Erin (Mike) Ryan, Janelle (Maty Bentley) Hallett, Addie (Bobby) Nelson, Jack (Cortney Redman) Schemenauer, and Crosby Schemenauer; Great-Grandchildren, Jackson Ryan, Myla Nelson, Nora Nelson, Gino Nelson, Frank Bentley and Fred Bentley; brothers, Ralph (Polly) Hagman and Richard Hagman; Nephews, John Hagman and Jeff Hagman; and their mother Brenda Hagman; Nephew, Murray Hagman; Niece, Krysta Hagman; and many other family members and dear friends.

There will be no visitation and services will be Private for family, per Janice's wishes.

Those wishing to make memorial donations are asked to consider the Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestra or The Toledo Repertoire Theatre.
