Janet Elizabeth Herliczek, age 75, of Ida, Michigan, passed away March 10, 2016. Janet was born November 18, 1940 in Riseley, England to Kenneth Edwin Cherry and Doreen Annie (Porter) Cherry. Janet came to the United States in 1964 and met her future husband Siegfried Herliczek in Boston. They were engaged two weeks later and married November 4, 1967. They moved to Toledo in 1970 where she became a U.S. citizen in 1972. They moved to Ida in 1976 and remained there until her passing.
When her children were younger, Jan volunteered often at their schools and at Zion Lutheran Church. She earned her Associates Degree from Monroe County Community College in 1986, and worked as an Optometrist Assistant in Toledo, Monroe and Tecumseh for many years, retiring in 1998. Janet was very involved for over 30 years with the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturing Programs in the Monroe area and received the prestigious Silver Beaver Award for her service. She was active with her husband in the Ski Club and the German Club in Toledo. She loved the outdoors: canoeing, kayaking, skiing, hiking, backpacking and traveling the world with her husband. Janet was also proud of her regular blood donations to the Red Cross.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving husband, Siegfried Harri Herliczek, daughter, Shannon Monique (Michael) Sandel of Keego Harbor, MI, son, Jeremy Lutz Herliczek, of Lansing, MI, grandchildren, Jaimie Nicole (Ashley) Luomala and Stefanie Marie (Ashley) Wabsis, both of Manistee, MI, and great grandchildren, Aiden, Evan, Brock and Tanner.
The family will receive guests Tuesday, March 15, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home NW Chapel, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will begin Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Janet's memory to The American Red Cross in Toledo.
