James West Jr.

Mr. James West, Jr. was born to the union of Rev. James and Amanda West on October 2, 1945, in Toledo, OH. He graduated from Jesup W. Scott High School. James started working while in high school to help out financially at home. He graduated from Carter Skill Trade School in carpentry and also was a certified meat cutter.

During his career he worked at A.D.T. Alarm Company and later went on to work for Keebler Distribution Center in Toledo, where he became the Vice Chairman of the union. James later transferred to Keebler in Michigan where he retired after 26 years. He was an entrepreneur and had many skills. He was involved in music, sports and taking care of his cars. James was a very giving and always helpful to his family and friends whom he dearly and deeply loved. He was an advocate for justice and was very thankful for all those that assisted him through his life journey.

He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma leukemia in 2017and was a survivor for 6 ½ years with the support of his family, (especially his sister Lucinda Sharp-Peeples), prayer partner, host of friends and loved ones. He greatly appreciated his daughter Ahjaynay, son James "Terrill" and daughter Donnita. He was also thankful for the doctors, nurses and staff at the University of Michigan Cancer Center, Franciscan Care Center, Toledo Clinic Cancer Center, Victory Center, Cancer Connection and ProMedica Ebeid Hospice Residence. James also had much gratitude for Debrah Scott.

James gave all glory to God, for he knew where all his help came from. He also had the opportunity to sing with interfaith Mass Choir in the Family/Friends Concert. He truly enjoyed the experience and was so gracious.

James was preceded in death by father, Rev. James West, Sr.; sister, Bobbie Jean West; sister, Lottie Williams; brother, Frederick West; sister, Claudia Bester; brother, Richard West; sister, Irena Terry Robinson; stepmother, Alonia West. He is survived by children: daughter, Donnita Saxton; son, James "Terrill" Barnes; daughter, Ahjaynay West; mother, Amanda West; sister, Vera West; sister, Lucinda Sharp-Peeples; brother, Gregory West; Aunt, Cordelia Roberts; 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, special son, Donnell Saxton and many friends.

The family will receive guests on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church from 10:00-11:00 a.m. with a service at 11:00 a.m. Entombment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park.

Newcomer Funeral Home-Southwest Chapel, Toledo (419-381-1900) is assisting the family with arrangements.
