James W. Mitchell, Sr., age 72, of Toledo, passed away Saturday, December 18th, 2010 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo. He was born December 5th, 1938 to Melvern Childers Mitchell, II and Lela Gladys (Hopes) Mitchell in Toledo, Ohio. James was a graduate of Scott High School. He went on to work for Inmont and then the City of Toledo for 31 years in the Sign Shop and Streets, Bridges and Harbors, retiring in 2002. He was a member of AFSME Local #007 and St. Marks Missionary Baptist Church. James was a serious collector of various sports cards. He also enjoyed collecting ball caps, bowling and fishing. In his younger years James was known for his talent and love for playing softball. James was also a huge fan and supporter of the Cleveland Browns cheering them on at every game. Most importantly, James was a devoted and loving husband, father, "Paw-Paw" and friend, cherishing special times with very special people in his life.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Mitchell. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Kathryn (Hemphill) Mitchell; children, Cheryl Bennett; James Mitchell, Jr., Regina "Kim" (Joe) Gray; Calvin Mitchell, Sr. and Kelly (Darrell) Bullock; brother, Melvern (Joyce) Mitchell, III.; half-sisters, Athylene Mitchell and Diane Mitchell; half-brother, Harold Mitchell; many wonderful grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of extended family members, including nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and dear friends.
The family will receive guests Monday, December 27th, 2010 from 2-8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. (419-381-1900). A Wake will be held Tuesday, December 28th, 2010 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, 1419 N. Detroit Ave. with Funeral Services beginning at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
